The North Adams Public Library is pleased to announce the appointment of Sara Russell-Scholl as the new youth services librarian. In addition to serving as the Thursday night and Saturday youth services assistant for three years, Russell-Scholl is the familiar face of toddler story times on Tuesdays. “Sara rose to the very top of eighteen potential candidates based on her professional experience at the Manice Education Center in Florida, Massachusetts and her native ability to connect with children of all ages,” said Library Director, Mindy Hackner. Russell-Scholl is beginning her duties at the busiest time of year in the youth services calendar. Her job begins on June 20, the very first day of summer reading sign-ups. Fortunately, staff members Kim DiLego and Nancy Ritter have been preparing the groundwork to help ease her workload. Sara lives on Florida Mountain with her husband Matt and three young children ages ten to four. We are pleased to welcome Sara to our small but powerful staff and hope you stop in to make her welcome.
We are moving all “New” materials including books, audio-books, and DVDs to the main reading room (the one with the chandelier) for better browsing. New fiction is on the left as you enter, new non-fiction to the right. New DVDs are by the marble fireplace, new large print and audio books are on the right directly across the way. All adult materials we purchase within the next six months to one year will be located here. Large print books begin on the last two shelves by the grand mirror and work their way alphabetically into the hallway. Thank you for your patience while we shift things around.
With thanks to Ed Noel for the photographs and to the Friends of the North Adams Public Library who administered the gift, enjoy this slide show of the Rivers’ memorial gift in action.
Long-time Youth Services Librarian, Kim DiLego will be moving over to the Reference Department officially on May 9 although she is already assuming many of the reference duties. DiLego was the unanimous choice based on her 20 years of experience at the library, her familiarity with library procedures, and the depth of her local history knowledge.
Kim earned her Masters of Library Information Science from the State University of New York Albany campus in August of 2005 and her BA from Westfield State University in 1989. She and her husband Paul have one daughter Maia.

Get out your e-readers, your Kindles, your Nooks, and iPads because Massachusetts libraries are adding a new electronic library for your reading pleasure. Login to the Commonwealth e-book collection with your library card number and PIN. If you have a library card issued before May of 2012, your PIN is probably LAST NAME (in CAPS) or try the last four (4) digits of your phone number. If you get stuck, call the library and we will reset your PIN. Much like Overdrive, these books are single use due to digital rights management (DRM) so you might have to wait for extremely popular titles, but the bright side is a wealth of choice. So download some books for the beach or travel and don’t forget to visit your brick and mortar library even if its only to say “hello.”
