(*Items numbered FIC HT 9
through 30, and FIC HT 33
through 39 are all
large photographs (of various sizes, from 18 x 14" to 13.5 x 10")
published in the 1860s and 1870s by the North Adams, Massachusetts
photographic firms Hurd & Smith, H. [Henry] D. Ward, and Hurd &
Ward, or by the Norwalk, Connnecticut firm of Bretton Perry. At
present, we have given attributions based solely on the names written
or printed on the photographs; however many of the photographs lacking
these attributions are clearly part of a set with others from the same
period. In more than one instance, a photographer's name is printed
officially on the front, while Bretton Perry is stamped on the back;
therefore Bretton Perry may only have distributed, rather than taken,
photographs stamped Bretton Perry. Titles are from the printed titles
on the front of some photographs. Titles listed below in quotation
marks are taken from former owner's writing on back, where there is no
printed title. Titles in brackets are created by NAPL. Arranged in
finding aid alphabetically by creator as corporate entity, followed by
anonymous works listed alphabetically by title, and lastly by two
non-itemized sets of photographs from document boxes RB #1 and HT #2. )
